" there's nothing better than a great romance to ruin a perfectly good friendship."-A Lot Like Love
One of the first movies I ever watched and loved. In fact, this was one of the movies that made me love movies. There I was, an impressionable 10-year old, finally having her own TV set and the first thing that comes when she switches it on? Only one of the greatest romances ever!
I know, I know. It's a rip-off of "When Harry Met Sally", and has an extremely predictable plot structure, but I just do not care. I love this movie the way obese people love pizza. And cheese fries. And McDonald's.
However, I have veered off the track so I'm gonna come back to it now. "A Lot Like Love." What the hell do I like about this movie? Ashton Kutcher singing "I'll Be There For You"? Amanda Peet and Ashton going on that road trip and singing in awful voices? The National Park scene (maybe this one is the absolute favourite)? Oliver's (Ashton's) sister screaming "You're such a dick!" at him when our meant-to-be-together hero and heroine finally kiss? The AWESOME soundtrack? I seriously don't know. I guess I love it because it is such a sweet yet realistic movie. How many of us, deep in our hearts, know what we want? I guess none of us. Maybe we don't want to admit it because we're too scared, or maybe we're just happily oblivious. And Oliver and Emily are like that too. They screw things up majorly. A lot. They don't like to admit that they're wrong, even when they know that that's true. They chase their dreams. They face failure. They make hugely embarrassing goof-ups. And all the while, they have an entirely plausible, yet beautiful romance.
Conclusively, maybe the reason that I love the movie so much is because it reminds me of a simpler time, when I believed that true love existed. Or maybe because each and every sentiment conveyed by the actors is real. Or just maybe because I've always wanted a romance like that. Whatever the reason, I simply adore it and never miss an opportunity to see it again. I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone looking for a simple funny tale of two real people in love.
